Al and Pat Tracy have just returned from a GREAT week in Ireland.
Historical Background:
With the exception of myself, my two brothers and about 2-3 others, this group of  Kenpo men in Ireland are
SENIOR to all other Kenpo stylists in the WORLD. This original group (still active) started with John McSweeney in 1963. Almost all Kenpo in Ireland and Europe can be traced back to John McSweeney.

Below are two links to an excellent video on youtube of the Ed Parker I studied and trained with. Ed in this video is 185 lbs. The other people involved are a "young" Joe Hyams (author; "Zen and the Martial Arts) and Nick Adams of "The Rebel" TV series. Note: Ed Parker's 2nd snap kick to Nick Adams is HEAD HIGH**. Also, when Ed does Short #3 Kata he uses the same opening as the "Two Man Set". Note the use of Lever (NOT Lone Kimono) and Kimono Grab - later removed from the American Kenpo System. For years Kimono Grab was the "Signature" move that defined "KENPO"!
History: When I and my two brothers started studying with Ed Parker we asked him, "What title should we use when we address you?" His reply "ED"! Ed and I were only 5 years apart in age.
Later generations were proud to claim that they studied with the "Old Man" ... because none of them ever studied with the "Young Ed Parker"
This video shows how Ed originally taught and moved. Ed looks good doing Short #3. Nick Adams moved very well for a
WHITE BELT". Note: Joe Hyams has three tips on his white belt.
I want to thank Dave Simmons for first posting them on Ted Sumners's San Jose Kenpo discussion board.

** I personally was holding a magazine as high as I could reach (7+ ft) and Ed kicked it out of my hand with a "front Chicken Kick"! As a young man Ed was an excellent, "powerful" kicker - all of his board breaking with his feet was done with "Power Thrust Kicks", not snap kicks. (Just try breaking 4-5 boards with a front snap kick!)
Note: From the ground position (on his back) Ed Parker was as good of a kicker as I have ever seen.
History: After studying with Ed and developing my hands, Ed would let me do all the breaking with my hands in demonstrations. No spacers, no pads - just bare knuckle against wood, bricks or concrete. However, Ed always did the breaking of boards with his feet!
Historical Note: Just as Ed is demonstrating with Nick Adams, Ed would also be the "UKI" when he taught us a technique. As he explained, "that way I know you are doing it right".

Follow-up to Bart Vale's - Black Belt Hall of Fame award for Full Contact fighter of the year.
Below is a link to the excellent Awards Video Black belt for Bart Vale.
This video clip includes Bart's famous knockout of Ken Shamrock.
Note: Bart stuns Ken with a Heel Palm to the forehead, then kicks him in the head three times before he hits the ground.
American Kenpo does not teach the type of kicks Bart Vale uses. They say the kicks are impractical and will not work. The final kick Bart uses is one of the most devastating kicks I have ever seen!

Bart Vale Shootfighting Highlights DVD
This DVD contains many highlights of some of Bart Vale's most dynamic matches
COST: $20 and this includes shipping

Below is a link to Jeff Speakman's answer to what Bart Vales teaches. He calls it KENPO 5.0!  Looks to me like sloppy American Kenpo and a little (Gracie) Jiu Jitsu 101 for beginners.  They are a little late (20 years) putting Jiu Jitsu back into Kenpo Jiu Jitsu.

Historical Update
It has now been over 70 years since James Mitose introduced Kenpo to Hawaii. Since that time thousands of Schools/clubs have taught Kenpo to hundreds of thousands of students. The art is being taught under many different names. The following list will try to cover the majority of these names and listed in the approximate time frame they were introduced:

Kenpo Jui Jitsu (Mitose) - Kenpo (Mitose) - Kenpo Karate (Chow using the Chinese character (Kara) for Karate - Hawaiian Kenpo - GO-Shinjitsu Chow) - Chinese Karate (Parker) American Kenpo (Dick Willett) Parker's American Kenpo - Shaolin Kenpo (Chow/Castro) - Kara-Ho-Kenpo (Chow). There are many other minor Variations.

HISTORICAL DOCUMENT:  There has been a lot of controversy and speculation as to how well Ed Parker knew James Mitose and over what period of time.. Here for the first time - in his own words in a personal letter Ed will clear up this part of history. I have added more historical information  (since I was there) to give you more insight into the history of Kenpo. Click here to get this information    The file is large so it may take a minute or two to load. I wanted you to be able to read the entire letter.

On a personal Note: Most of you know my son, Mark. But I also have a daughter, Kristina (Tina) - Click here to give you a short page on "Tina"

Family Tree up-date

Why am I not on your family tree?

Two main reasons:
1. Tracy's National Headquarters has never issued you a diploma.
2. Your instructor has never notified Tracy's that you have been promoted
.

To get on the Tracy Family Tree:
1. Send us a photocopy of your diploma.
2. Have your instructor send us the info on the Rank you were promoted to - and the date

I would like to thank Action Martial Arts for putting me on the cover of the Aug/Oct 2000 issue. The great thing about Action Martial Arts Magazine is that it is actually read by thousands of "real" martial artists. They also wrote an excellent cover story.
